Campsite at Joe Wheeler State Park - Photo by Norman W. HildrumNorthern Alabama is a scenic area punctuated by the Tennessee River and several Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) projects including Wheeler Dam midway between the cities of Florence and Decatur. The park is named for General Joe Wheeler, A West Point graduate at nineteen, he served in three wars, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and the Philippine occupation. In addition, he was elected to Congress from Alabama for eighteen years.

Joe Wheeler State Park is a highly developed resort park that caters to most recreational activities including boating, fishing, water-skiing, swimming, golf, tennis, basketball, picnicking, and hiking (interpretative programs are offered during the summer months). Accommodations include a beautiful lodge and a fantastic 116 unit campground. The well designed campground is situated in a mature stand of pines and hardwoods and offers paved interior roads and Main Lodge at Joe Wheeler State Park - Photo by Norman W. Hildrumcamp spurs. The vast majority of camp sites have electric (20/30 amp), water, and sewer hook-ups. The shower buildings are very well designed and maintained. There is a small store, laundry, and dump station. Our cost was just $66 per week and that included all hook-ups (11/99) making this stop a SavvyCamper best buy.

We suspect the campground is more hectic and crowded during the summer, however, the setting is exceptional and a visit is well worth the effort. For more information on Joe Wheeler State Park contact the park office at (205) 27-5466
